The Sound of Music and Guido of Arezzo
Do-re-mi
Do you remember the clip of the film Mary Poppins which we saw at the beginning of this project? She is played by the English actress and singer Julie Andrews, who made another lovely musical in 1965:
The Sound of Music
In this film (with lovely songs by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein), she plays a governess who teaches the seven children in the family to sing. To do this she uses a song in which the first word of each line sounds like the name of each note of the musical scale:
Do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti (in English they say "ti" instead of "si"), do.
Let´s just practice singing the scale:

Now, here are the words of the song that she teaches the children to sing:
(Do) Doe, a deer, a female deer
(Re) ray, a drop of golden sun
(Mi) me, a name I call myself
(Fa) far, a long, long way to run
(So) sew, a needle pulling thread
(La) la, a note to follow so
(Ti) tea, a drink with jam and bread
That will bring us back to doe.
Can you translate this?
The literal translation would be:
Cerva, un cervo, un cervo femia,
Raio, unha gota de sol dourado.
Eu, un nome polo que me chamo a min mesma,
Lonxe, un longo camiño a percorrer,
Coser, unha agulla que tira do fío,
La, unha nota que segue o sol,
Té, unha bebida con pan e marmelada,
E isto traenos de volta ao do.
This sounds terrible in Galician! That's because when you translate songs you sometimes have to change the meaning a bit so that it follows the rhythm of the music and it rhymes. Do you know how they translated this song for dubbing the Spanish version of the film......? And what do you think of this translation?......
Memorise "Do-re-mi"
See if you and your classmates can memorise the lyrics of the song "Do-re-mi".
Then you´ll find it easier to sing along with the film.
How long does it take you to memorise?
Don't worry if you can't memorise it all: there are always videos with the lyrics to help us sing!
Let's sing with Julie Andrews and the children!
OK, so now let's watch the famous clip of the film when Julie Andrews, acting as Maria de governess, teaches the children to sing. It is set in the beautiful Alps in Austria and the lovely city of Salzburg.
See how many of you can sing along without the karaoke!
And then, play the karaoke version so that everybody can join in.
(If you really hate singing, you can practice lip-synching! Let's hope your teacher doesn't notice!)
(Or if you have a guitar o keyboard in class, maybe you can learn the chords).

Who was Guido of Arezzo?
Who was Guido of Arezzo and why are we including him here with The Sound of Music?
Well, Guido of Arezzo lived in the Middle Ages, around the year 1000, and he is considered to be the inventor of modern musical notation. He invented the names of the notes that we know now (except that "do" was called "ut" at the beginning). He did this in a similar way to the governess Maria in the film! But he used the first syllables of the lines of a hymn that already existed. The name "ti/si" was added later.
