How much do you actually know about the Titanic?

The real Titanic

See how many of these questions you can answer. If you don't know the answer, guess!

1) In what year did the Titanic sink?

2) Where was it sailing from and to?

3) What caused it to sink?

4) How many people died?

5) Has the real Titanic ever been found?

READ this interesting page with real photographs of the Titanic.

(There are no real photographs or videos of the ship sinking; the real photos and films are of the ship being built in Belfast, Ireland, and in the docks at Southampton before sailing towards New York. There are also real photos and film of the survivors in life boats and on board the Carpathia, the ship that went to the rescue and picked up survivors from the lifeboats to take them to land).

WATCH some real footage (film) of the Titanic,

including film of the brave captain who felt terribly guilty when disaster struck

and preferred to drown with the ship.

Classical music in this last video

What famous piece of classical music is used in the first part of the video you just watched?????

And now, TRY PLAYING IT! This is for the recorder with piano chords:

if you have a keyboard in class you can play that, too.

The beginning is easy and then it gets really difficult.

Maybe some of you are very good at the recorder (maybe some of you play other instruments in your town band, for example, and so you have got an advantage in music class!)

And probably some of you aren't quite so professional yet!

So just play up to where you feel is right for you.

Underwater images of the real Titanic

Have a look at the real images of the Titanic lying on the ocean floor, four kilometres under the sea. It was discovered in 1985 but these images are from another dive to it many years later.

EXTRA READING ACTIVITY

Did you know that the first film about the Titanic was released only 29 days after it sunk??? Amazing.

And the star of that film, Dorothy Gibson, had actually been on the real Titanic, and in the film she even wore the clothes she had worn on that terrible night (a white silk evening dress with a cardigan and a coat). Wow!!!

If you are a real Titanic fan, here is an interesting article on all the films made about the disaster.
