Aloha Oe - Hawaii (US)
Aloha Oe
Aloha Oe is a farewell Hawaiian folk song written around 1878 by Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Kamakaʻeha (1838-1917) know as Queen Liliʻuokalani. She was the queen of the Hawaiian kingdom from 1891 to 1893 when a coup d’état to establish a republic sent her to prison.
Besides her political life, she was considered a skilled writer and song composer. She also played some instruments such as piano, ukelele, guitar and zither. In her music she mixed traditional elements of Hawaiian culture and harmonies and rhythms brought to the islands by missionaires. She wrote songs such as He Mele Lāhui Hawaiʻi, a request from King Kamehameha V which became the third of Hawaiʻi's four national anthems; Ahe Lau Makani, (The Soft Gentle Breeze), a waltz and a love song ; Kuʻu Pua I Paoakalani, written while in prison to remember her garden. She also wrote a book (1898) Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen, a memoir book.
Aloha oe has become a really famous and representative song of Hawaiian music. It is said to be inspired by a real farewell. The lyrics not only reflect the goodbye moment but also nature accompanying the feeling of sadness through rain and cliffs.
