There is / There are:

THERE IS / THERE ARE:

We use 'there is' and 'there are' to express existence ('Hai').



AFFIRMATIVE:

(Singular)

There is a ball in my schoolbag. (=Hai unha pelota na miña mochila).


(Plural)

There are two balls in my schoolbag. (=Hai dúas pelotas na miña mochila).

 

NEGATIVE:

(Singular)

a) SHORT FORM: There isn't a ball in my schoolbag. (=Non hai unha pelota na miña mochila).

b) LONG FORM: There is not a ball in my schoolbag. (=Non hai unha pelota na miña mochila).


(Plural)

a) SHORT FORM: There aren't two balls in my schoolbag. (=Non hai dúas pelotas na miña mochila).

b) LONG FORM: There are not two balls in my schoolbag. (=Non hai dúas pelotas na miña mochila).

 

INTERROGATIVE: 

(Singular) 

Is there a ball in my schoolbag? 


SHORT ANSWERS:
 

A) Affirmative: Yes, there is. 

B) Negative: No, there isn't. 



(Plural)

Are there two balls in my schoolbag? 



SHORT ANSWERS: 

A) Affirmative: Yes, there are.

B) Negative: No, there aren't. 

THERE IS / ARE / ISN’T / AREN’T:

Complete with There + is/are/isn't/aren't or with the interrogative form:
