We use demonstratives to refer to singular/plural and to know if something is close or far.

Close: 

This (singular): This is my cat. 

These (plural): These are my cats. 

Far: 

That (singular): That is my cat. 

Those (plural): Those are my cats. 

Demonstratives: THIS, THESE, THAT, THOSE:
