LIVE MUSIC 4: MUSIC IN THEATRE PLAYS

MUSIC IN THEATRE PLAYS

Music is an important part of a theatre play for several reasons:

  a) Music creates an atmosphere which helps actors get into the story.

  b) It also helps the audience connect to the story.

  c) It helps drive the narrative forward.

There are some different types of music as a theatrical play develops:

1. Overture music: It is used to anticipate what the audience is going to see, creating the right atmosphere.

2. Between acts music: Some scenographic changes may happen between acts, so music has two aims here, the first one is to give the idea of continuity between scenes and the second to give the audience some time to reflect on what has just happened and what is going to happen on stage.

3. Incidental music: It is also called background music. It is used to fill silent moments or to emphasize emotions and actions happening on stage.

4. Ambient music: The sound effects are also a part of the theatrical music, for example, a door that closes, a phones that rings, steps, traffic noise, etc.

5. Final music: It helps develop or show the result of the whole story at the end of the play.

A musical is theatrical production that is characteristically sentimental and amusing. It offers dancing, singing and dialogue.
