LIVE MUSIC 4: ICT in the music classroom

Image of a presentaionICT resources have meant a change in the dynamic and organization of the music class. It is now part of the syllabus content and it helps assimilate musical concepts, increase motivation and foster creativity as well as get instant feedback. Here you can find some web pages and programmes that can be used to enrich the class activity.

1. Programmes to create scores and help practise music elements.

LenMus Phonascus is a downloadable open software app. You can create scores, do exercises with interactive music scores where notes are highlighted as they are played. There are also aural exercises to practise intervals, scales, chords and cadences. It includes counters for incorrect and correct answers and a display of the marks achieved, so that you can self-asses your progress.  


Musescore is a downloadable free software to produce and edit scores. You can export what  you create in PDF files, PNG, SVG images, MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG audio,Tutorial MIDI and Music XML. You can add percussion, several instruments and lyrics. You can instantly listen to what you have just created.


Teoría is a web page full of exercises for advanced music students. It contains ear training, sight singing practice and theory exercises. No sign in required. 

2. Programmes to present material. 

LibreOffice Impress is part of the LibreOffice free office suite. You can create and organise slides in a simple way, adding sound files, images andTutorial videos.


Canva is an online graphic design tool. It has got a free option that lets you use more than two fifty hundred thousand free templates and hundreds ofTutorial thousand of free photos, graphics and some small videos.  You can invite members to your team and collaborate and comment in real time. It offers 5GB free cloud storage. You can download your creations in PNG, FDF, add sound to slides and even download in Mp4 video format. There is a special plan for educational purposes.


Adobe Express is an online and mobile disign app. The free option lets you use thousands of templates and fonts, a limited collection of royalty-freeTutorial Adobe stock free collection photos, basic editing and photo effects including remove background and animate, 2GB storage. You can create logos, posters, flyers, advertisements, etc. There is a special plan for educational purposes.

3. Video editor for computers

OpenShot is a very simple free video creator You can download it and works with Linux. You can resize, scale, trim, rotate and cut videos, add Tutorialtransitions, subtitles, audio, scrolling motion picture credits, etc. You can also burn your film to DVD, upload to social media, and export in many common video formats.


Kdenlive is a downloadable free, open source video editing software. You can use multiple tracks and sound, add effects and transitions and you can create tiles using text. It supports a lot of formats including: raw, avi, mpeg4, h.264, AVCHD, HDV. It works with Linux.Tutorial


Avidemux is a simple free and open source software application. You can use several videos, insert audio, extract audio from a video and transcode videos into different formats. It works on the different operating systems. You have to download and install the app in your computer.Tutorial

3. Video editor for mobile phones

Power director. This IOS and Android app has a free version. You can trim, splice, and rotate videos, add surprising effects and transitions with drag and drop, add text, etc. You don't need editing experience. It has an HD 1080p output.Tutorial


Splice. It an IOS and Android compatible downloadable app useful for beginners. The free version has all the basic features to edit a video: crop, trim, add effects and sounds from its gallery and easy upload to social media.Tutorial

4. Sound editors and sound creators.

Audacity is a free, open-source application to record and edit audio. It can run on Linux, Mac OS X, Windows, and other operating systems. It can recordsTutorial live audio through a microphone, a mixer or from other media, import and export files from and to different sound formats, copy, cut, paste, delete options for easy editing, etc.


BandLab is a free phone app to create and share music. You can record, edit, remix music, use loops, add effects and sample from a royalty-free library that includes genres such as dubstep, rock, rap, house, etc. No suscription fee and illimited cloud storage.Tutorial


Incredibox is a music app but also a webpage with some free characteristics. You can create your own music with the help of a merry crew of beatboxers. It enriches your notions of rhythm and melody in a funny way. 

5. Music and scores repositories.

Mutopia is an open source contemporary and classical collection of Public Domain or Creative Commons licence scores that can be downloaded, printed, distributed. 


Freepd. You don't even have to log in to download MP3 music files. No attribution required for these CC0 music archives. It has a powerful search engine to find different types of music.


Jamendo is a music website where users can download and stream music if they don't use them for commercial use. It is easy to locate the music you need.


Lamusicagratis is a webpage where you can find no copyright music to download legally. You can use a search engine which categorises the music into emotions, genres and authors.
