Creative lab: instruments and melodies
There are three melodies here to improvise percussion instrument practice (castanets and square tambourine) and recorder while paying attention to all the elements studied in this unit.
Que Se Vengan Los Chicos
1. What about starting with a recorder, one of the classroom instruments. How about starting with the recorder, one of the most commonly used instrument in the classroom to learn music . The first thing we're going to do is look over the score and make sure we know all the notes.
Here's the sound file corresponding to the marimba and clave scores to help you follow the melody.
The next step is to examine the image below to see how to play the notes with the recorder. Practise enough till you can perform the fluently. Then look at the score and combine them to play the melody. The grey dots show which holes on the recorder you need to cover, while the white and grey ones show the holes you should leave open.
Finally watch the video and imitate it. Rehearse till you perform fluently, accurately and with no hesitation.
El Vito
Let’s continue with another melody we’ve studied in this unit. We’re going to practise El Vito using castanets, one of the traditional instruments of Andalusian folk music. Have a look at the score and listen to the accompaning sound. You have to rehearse till you perform properly. Here you have the full score in case you have doubts.
Now, depending on your needs, watch the video and check if you are doing properly or find a clue of how to perform the castanent accompaniment.
Morrison's jig
The last creative activity consists of playing a square tambourine, also called adufe, to accompany the melody of the song Morrison's Jig. The rhythmic ostinato will be a crotchet and a quaver in a bar and six quavers in the following bars as you can see in the ostinato image below.
Here's the sound file of the violin and xylophone so that you accompany them with the square tambourine.
And, of course, here's the video with the result you have to achieve. Practise enough so that you can perform correctly and fluently.
