Amelia was a pioneer of aviation. She was born in 1897 in Kansas (U.S.A.). During World War I she volunteered as a nurse. Next to the hospital there was a flying training field and she discovered her passion for flying. Her family didn't want her to be a pilot, because it was a strange job for a woman and it was very dangerous! But Amelia was brave and she decided to study aviation. In 1923 she had an international pilot's license!
She was the first woman (and the second person!) to fly across the Atlantic Ocean alone, from Canada to Ireland. Imagine flying over the Atlantic Ocean for 14 hours in a plane made in 1932! Such a great adventure! She made flights across the USA and across the Pacific ocean. In 1937, Amelia started a trip from Miami (USA) to fly around the world, but she and her plane disappeared in the middle of the Pacific ocean. The USA Army and the Japanese navy sent help, but they couldn't find Amelia. She was a fantastic inspiration for lots of women.
