How do we hear sounds?

Sound waves may travel through air, water and solid objects. The sound waves get into the ear canal till they make the ear drum vibrate. This vibration moves the three ear bones and they transmit the vibrations to the cochlea. The hairs on the membrane of the cochlea are stimulated and this stimulation gets to the auditory nerve, which sends the signals to the brain.

Sound. Qualities of sound

1. These are the qualities of sound: intensity, duration, pitch and timbre. Study the definitions and practise the words aloud. Then complete the words under the sound boxes.

TIMBRE: It is the quality of sound that allows us to distinguish different voices and different instruments. It is also called tone colour.

DURATION: It indicates the length a sound lasts. Sounds may be short or long.

PITCH: It is the quality of sound that allows us to classify sounds as high or low.

INTENSITYIt is the characteristic of sound that tells us the difference between a loud sound (forte) and a soft sound (piano).

There are some degrees of intensity: pianissimo (pp)→ really soft / piano (p)→ soft / mezzoforte (mf)→ middle / forte (f)→ loud / fortissimo (ff)→ really loud. Listen to the words and write them.
