PRONUNCIATION: Consonant clusters with initial -s

Words that start with an s-consonant cluster

The verbs below have something in common: they all start with an -s followed by a consonant. How do you pronounce them? Read them aloud. There is one word in which the spelling s is not pronounced /s/, which one?

 

scream - shout - skate - sleep - smile - speak - study - sweat

Exercise 1

Read the text below and choose the correct option. Then listen and check if your predictions were right.

The pronunciation of the spelling S another , for example sc, sk, sl, sm, sp, st and sw...this pronunciation is  for Spanish speakers because we don't have these sequences of sounds at the beginning of a word. The mistake is to pronounce an " " vowel  the cluster; for example, when we pronounce Spain we say "/espein/" instead of /spein/ or when we want to say "start" we say /estart/ instead of /start/To break that habit, a good tip is to exaggerate the pronunciation of /s/ before you pronounce every word, let's do it: sssssspeak, ssssssstart, sssssssmell.
