What do we commemorate? / 21 February, International Mother Language Day

21 February, International Mother Language Day tries to promote linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism and recognizes the importance of languages to preserve intangible heritage.

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) chose this date in tribute to the protests of Bengali Language Movement in Bangladesh in 1952. They wanted the Dominion of Pakistan to recognize Bengali language as an official language. After years of conflict, Bengali became an official language in 1956.
