Many countries celebrate World Book and Copyright Day on April 23rd to encourage reading, promote publishing and copyright and pay tribute to authors.

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) chose this day because it commemorates the nearness of the death of Cervantes, Shakespeare and other authors' date of birth or death.

The United Kingdom celebrates World Book and Copyright Day on the first Thursday in March.
