In the past, artistic styles have covered long periods of time (for instance the Baroque through the 17th and 18th centuries ), but since the late 19th century different styles and movements changed rapidily and no longer did artists accept the rules of the "art authority" as they lived art as a personal self-expression.
Artists had previously worked at the service of patrons from the Church, the aristocracy or the State, but in this period, they became more independent.
The developement of the middle-class urban life had a great impact on art that became part of the dominant market economy.
