Post-Impressionism

By breaking the strict limits of the academic art, Impressionism opened the gates to modern art, but certain groups of artists wanted to go further.

The term Post-Impressionism refers to some artists that didn´t form a unified movement but who shared certain characteristics  developed later by different avant-garde movements.

  • They derived from Impressionism (real life themes, thick application of paint)
  • They were no longer interested in the effects of light.
  • They wanted to express emotions or some intelectual approach to the conception of forms.
  • They did an arbitrary use of color.
  • More defined outlines.
  • They emphasized geometric forms.
