Ciranda, Cirandinha

Ciranda, Cirandinha is a popular Brazilian song that accompanies circle dances originally performed by farmers, fishermen, and rural workers. Later the melody evolved to urban areas and also became a children's song in many places even though there are some other areas, such as Pernambuco (located in the northeast of the country) where it is still an adult dance. Cirandas have been passed down orally thanks to their simple and joyful lyrics and rhyming words, which make them easy for group singing. The most commonly used time signature is binary. Ternary and quaternary time signatures are rarely used. These songs generally use percussion instruments such as the zabumba, tarol, ganzá, and maracas.

They are considered inclusive music, as everyone was invited to participate regardless of social status, age, or race. Even the lyrics encouraged people to join in. Their origin is uncertain; Portugal, where circle dancing was common, Africa, where slaves used them to preserve their culture, and Spain, due to the word 'zaranda' (an instrument used to sift flour), have all been mentioned as possible sources of these melodies.
