Creative lab: instruments and melodies
There are three melodies here to improvise percussion while paying attention to all the elements studied in this unit.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice
1. This is one of the melodies you are already familiar with. Let's start practising the ostinato in the image.
(quaver, quaver rest and quaver) as we see it in the video. The purpose is to interiorize ternary subdivision (three pulses per beat) by gently tapping on the table. Use an object that can't be heard.
2- Once you have rehearsed enough, it is time to combine ostinato and melody as in the video below.
3.
Here's the sound file so that all students may follow the melody properly. As you can see this is the original tempo, so increase speed to get to how the piece is really played. Enjoy!
The Rocky Road to Dublin
1- Our next task is to play on the tambourine the following rhythmic motif which is usual in ternary subdivision, crotchet and quaver (as in the image,
) performing this ostinato throughout the entire piece while the melody plays. This video below shows you how to perform thes ostinato in the image.
2- If you have practise enough, you are ready to play the ostinato while listening to the melody, as in the video.
3-Once you have practised enough, it is time for group play and fun. Here's the sound file.
El Burrito Sabanero
After practicing the previous melodies, you should now be able to play ostinatos properly. The song we are going to use is El Burrito Sabanero. We will need some instruments, and we are going to incorporate different ostinatos.
1- The first practice will use a triangle and this ostinato,
, a semibreve. The triangle comes in on the strong beat of the measure, playing that semibreve.

2- Now it is turn to play the jingle bells to the rhythm of quavers. Look at the ostinato:
and the video.
3- And there is still another intrument to be used, the maracas play the following rhythmic motif: quaver, crotchet, quaver (syncopation)
. Check with the video what you have to do.

4.
Finally, choose an intrument and play together as in the video. You have also the sound file.
