Creative lab: instruments and melodies
Hallelujah
This is the first piece we are going to work with. It is easy as it has already been seen previously. Get your drumsticks and let's accompany the melody! We will play the figures of ternary subdivision: dotted crotchet
, crotchet and quaver
, and dotted minim
.
1. Analyze the notes played by the xylophone, but be careful! Most of them are harmonic intervals whose notes sound at the same time .
2- Then listen to the melody played by the recorder and accompany it.
3- Finally, watch the video and see if you are playing properly.
Vargsången
In this second part of our Creative Lab, there is a body percussion exercise with your feet that will help you internalize the ternary subdivision (represented in the image by three quavers,
) in the 6/8 time signature showing how each beat is divided into three. Revise the score before starting the activity.
We step with the heel to mark the first beat of three and with the sole of the foot for the other two, thus marking one-two-three as the three quavers ostinato. Play the video to see how the ostinato is performed, which we will repeat throughout the entire piece.
Now, with the help of the audio for the piece, we accompany it using the previous rhythmic motif. Play video 2 to see how the rhythmic ostinato is played throughout the melody.
Pair Improvisation activity: dare to create a new rhythm with your feet that can be played in the 6/8 time signature.
The Barcarolle
1- Finally, we are moving on to the third melody. This is the ostinato we will use
(quaver, rest, quaver). Watch the video and try to imitate it.
2- Pair Improvisation activity: improvise a rhythm using hand percussion and a cup with note values that fit into a 6/8 time signature.
