- It is one of the things London is most famous for: a network of railway tunnels that connect 270 stations. It opened in 1863 and it was the first of this type in the world.
- Also called the Palace of Westminster. They are formed by the House of Lords and the House of Commons. Their main functions are making laws, imposing taxes and debating current issues. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as parts of the United Kingdom, have representatives in the Parliament in London.
- This name is actually the name of the bell that is placed inside the tower. The clock inside is one of the biggest and most precise ever made. It is part of the Palace of Westminster, it has 4 clock faces, one on each side, and it is 96 metres high. Nobody knows the origin of its name.
- It is a fortress in London and it has been a castle, a palace and a prison since the 1070s. It has a central tower called The White Tower. Seven ravens live here today . Their names are Jubilee, Harris, Gripp, Rocky, Erin, Poppy and Merlina. The wardens feed them twice a day with mice, chicks and rats.
- The Yeoman warders guard the Tower of London and the crown jewels and they have been there for centuries. They are called like that because they could eat all the beef they desired from the King's table. They wear a blue uniform or a red one on special occasions. Every night before 10.00 pm, they make the Ceremony of the keys. They are different from the Yeoman of the guard. These ones do not work at The Tower.
- It is a mix of bascule bridge and suspension bridge. Built in 1894 it can lift itself to allow tall ships to pass through.
- The tallest observation wheel in Europe. It is 135 metres high and from here you can have the best view of London. It was opened in 2000 after 7 years of construction.
- It is the official residence of Queen Elisabeth II, the British Queen. Some parts of the palace are open to visitors in summer. It has got 775 rooms, of which 188 are staff bedrooms, 78 are bathrooms and 92 are offices. Every year the Queen gives three garden parties in the palace for around 30,000 people.

By the way, we always find the colours of the flag of the United Kingdom (known as 'Union Jack') everywhere in
London souvenirs. Why do you think it is? Maybe because London is the capital of the UK? Maybe because the English
flag is also represented in the UK flag? Both things? Have a look at this and discuss with your partner to agree on an
answer.
Look below at the origin of the UK flag and how it was made.
