2. Top Biggest Cities in the UK

Time to Watch and Listen!

Once you have understood the structure of the United Kingdom, let's think about the city names that ring a bell to

you. Most probably London is on top position for you all. Who doesn't know this city name? But ... what can you tell

about it? Have you ever been to London? What other UK city names do you know? If you think about some of your

interests like football you will probably discover that you know more than you actually think. Let's see!

In the following video we will see the top 10 biggest cities in the United Kingdom. Pay attention as you will be asked

to complete a listening comprehension activity afterwards:

Ready for Research?

In the previous video, you learnt the name of a lot of UK cities. Can you locate them on a map?

Your job now is to investigate where they are and to mark them with a symbol (♦, for example) on the following map.

I will give you a copy of the map but if you prefer, you can draw it on your notebook.

Use 
Google Earth, a website consiting of a virtual 3D globe that allows you to explore the whole word from your

seat thanks to satellite images. Amazing, isn't it? Click below and complete this task on your notebook.

Follow these steps:

1) Go to Google Earth website

2) Click on the top left magnifier icon.

3) Write the name of the U.K. city you want to locate. (Attention: Make sure you choose the right country on Google Earth. The same names can exist in other parts of the world too!)

4) Enlarge (+) or reduce (-) the image as you need.

5) Once understood its location in the UK, draw a symbol (♦) on your map and indicate its name with an arrow (→). Don't forget to be precise!

Now look at this compass with all the cardinal points. Are these cities in the North, in the South, in the West, in the

NorthEast (North and East at the same time) .... of the UK? What do you think? Discuss with a classmate first. Then, we

will confirm that in class.
