Rocks

Rocks

Rocks are natural substances composed of different minerals. There are three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.
IGNEOUS ROCKS SEDIMENTARY ROCKS METAMORPHIC ROCKS
They are rocks formed from magma that has come up to the crust and has solidified after cooling. They are formed from pieces of other rocks that are carried by a river or the wind to the bottom of a lake, a sea or a sedimentation basin. They are rocks that change into other rocks because of extreme pressure and heat.

There are two types of igneous rocks:

a. Intrusive/Plutonic rocks: the magma that formed them cooled down slowly and formed large crystals.

b. Extrusive/Volcanic rocks: the magma that formed them cooled quickly and formed small crystals.

Carbon and petroleum come from the remains of plants and animals, that's why we call them fossil fuels.

Petroleum is the only rock which is liquid.

There are two types of metamorphic rocks:

a. Foliated rocks: they show layers or bands in their appearance, for example, gneiss, slate or schist.

b. Non-foliated rocks: they don't show layers or bands in their appearance, for example, marble, quartzite or hornfels.

Extra Activity

1. Choose the right words/s for each statement.
1. Carbon and petroleum are called . 5. Marble is a rock.
2. Volcanic rocks are also called . 6. Sandstone is a rock.
3. When the magma cools down slowly, it forms . 7. Metamorphic rocks change due to and .
4. Rocks are substances composed of minerals.
 2. Watch this video about fossil fuels and see if you can answer the questions in pairs.

Formation of Fossil Fuels. Earth: The operator's manual. YouYube. (YouTube Standard Licence)

Teamwork

1. Where was the video recorded?

2. How were fossil fuels formed?

3. Which fossil fuels are mentioned in the video?

4. What are the problems that overuse of fossil fuels may cause?

3. Now write down all the things in the school or at home that work with fossil fuels. Are there any other devices or gadgets that run on another type of energy? What can we do to avoid fossil fuels use?

Projects

PROJECT1 PROJECT 2 PROJECT 3
Create a slideshow/poster showing, at least, five quarries in Galicia. Which rocks are extracted there? Place the quarries in a map.

a. Create a slideshow showing which rocks are used in things we have around.

b. Create a card/infographic showing the rocks that can be found in the area where you live.

Browse the Universtity of Santiago de Compostela Natural History Museum page and prepare a slideshow to explain other students what they could see there. Don’t forget to watch the virtual tour area so that you can find information about the museum’s history and the different exhibitions.
