5. Breaking the mold!

In the 20^th century there are several musical trends. It’s a period of changes, the moment of two great wars, political and economical instability, the end of the government of big dynasties, advances in technology and medicine, discovery of electricity, telephone, radio, television and at the end, the Internet; antibiotics, space flights and planes. What a century!

All these changes took place very quickly, not like in the previous years when a trend used to last longer. So, many composers worked with different styles throughout their lives.

Regarding music, this century was a period of experimentation. Musicians felt frustrated with the instability of the world they lived in, and wanted to change everything that was done up till that point. That’s how the new styles appeared. We are going to learn a few of them, they are the so-called –isms.
