Housing

With respect to housing, the oikía was designed to keep people cool in the long hot summers and to retain the heat in winter. Larger homes had a kitchen, a room for bathing, a men's dining room called andron and a women's sitting area called gynaikon. The houses were planned around a courtyard and had high walls and a strong gate. Much of ancient Greek family life centred around the courtyard.
