Major Conquests during the Republic
During the Republic, Rome began to expand territorially with the help of
its disciplined and organised army. They dominated the Italian Peninsula by the
mid-third century BC. Then the expansion went on with the
- control over the western Mediterranean region. This involved fighting against Carthage in three conflicts called the Punic Wars
- control over the eastern Mediterranean region. They confronted Greece and the Hellenistic monarchies
- conquest of Gallia.
After the conquest of Hispania and Egypt, the Romans controlled all of the Mediterranean area, which they called Mare Nostrum ("Our Sea"). You will undestand this process with the help of the interactive map by Chronoaltlas. Just click on the period to see the new territories conquered.
