Drawing a face
To draw a face you must choose different attributes: shape of the head, proportions, elements of the face, hair, accesories...
Improve your drawing with these tips!
Head: shape and proportions.
First of all, choose the shape of the head.
- You can make it more realistic using soft shapes like ovals.
- You can draw a cartoon head using different shapes: squares, triangles, rectangles...
The proportions of the head are easy to remember:
- Divide the head in two halves: this is the eye line.
- Divide the lower half in two again: this is the nose line.
- Then divide the lowest half in two: this is the mouth line.
Remember: Trace all of these lines very gently. You will erase them once you have finished.
Face: Ears, eyes, nose, mouth and hair.
- Draw the eyes, the nose and the mouth in their lines.
- The ears fit between the eye line and the nose line.
- The hair is above and below the top of the head.
- Draw the shape of the hair, don't try to draw every hairs.
- Don't forget the neck. Start drawing the neck under the ears.
- Once you have finished, erase the guidelines and outline the drawing.
Facial expressions: emotions.
There are three basic features when representing emotions: eyebrows, eyes and mouth.
Check the position of these basic features in different emotions: sadness, happiness, anger, surprise, calm, fear...
