6.1. Before starting: grip in badminton

Before starting to perform the basic shots in badminton, it is very important to hold the racket properly.

There are two basic ways to hold your racket:

  • forehand grip and
  • backhand grip.

Have a look at the table below to find out some characteristics about both grips in badminton.

FOREHAND GRIP BACKHAND GRIP
  1. Apply a handshake grip.
  2. Put your index finger in the higher level of the grip.
  3. Rest your thumb on the left side of the grip, slightly touch the middle finger.
  4. Hold your racket lightly.
  1. Apply a pinching grip.
  2. Keep index finger and thumb in the same level.
  3. Put your thumb in flat surface of the grip.
  4. Hold your racket lightly.

It’s time for you to practice the forehand and backhand grips.
