Although during the19th century women´s education started to be promoted in some ways, they were still encouraged to remain at home, away from the public sphere, developing the virtues of submissiveness and purity. They were thought to need just the necessary education to bring their children up and to be the perfect wives.
These ideas were reinforced by some doctors who warned that higher education was both physically and mentally destructive to the female.
A different nature needed a different education to keep women in a different sphere than men.
