Life in trenches

The trenches warfare was probably the most cruel stage of the First World War. Many letters and diaries written by soldiers describe the horrible living conditions in trenches, where they suffered severe disesases (like "trench foot") and the continuous threat of death. The military operations caused enormous loss of life, but at the end, Allies had gained just a few miles of territory.
