Spanish Foreign Policy:

– The objectives were:

➔ Conservation of territories.
➔ Strengthening of Spanish rule in Europe.
➔ Defence of Catholic Church.

– The rivals:
➔ France: it was defeated by Carlos I at Battle of Pavia (1525) and by Felipe II (Battle of Saint Quentin, 1557).
➔ Turks: they were stopped by Carlos I before they reached Vienna; Later they lost the Battle of Lepanto (1571).
➔ The protestants: They fought against Carlos I who defeated them at the Battle of Mühlberg (1547).
The peace of Augsburg (1555) recognised the liberty of religion for each German prince.
➔ Dutch revolt: they fought against Felipe II and they proclaimed their independence under the name of United Provinces.
➔ England: Elizabeth I fought against Felipe II. The Spanish monarch sent the Spanish Armada but it was defeated (1588).
