Syria President Bashar al-Assad succeeded his father Hafez in 2000. Since then, many syrians complained about the corruption and the lack of freedom. In March 2011, some demonstrations began in the southern city of Deraa, inspired by the "Arab Spring" in other north african countries. The Arab Spring was a series of anti-government protests and armed rebellions that spread all throughout the Middle East at that time. When the government used deadly force to crush the dissent, protests demanding the president's resignation appeared nationwide.
The violence intensified. Opposition supporters took up arms, and in many cities like Aleppo, the most populous city in the country, they defeated the security forces. The violence quickly escalated and the country went into a civil war.
Many Syrians then fleed their country, ,ainly to Europe because The Arab states of the Persian Gulf have not accepted any Syrian refugees. Once in Europe they usually live in refugee camps, receiving the support of european citizens. Sadly, the most famous is the so-called "The Jungle" in Calais, France. Some countries like Germany, promised to receive a higher number of refugees but it backed out.
The country that hosts the largest number of refugees per inhabitant is Lebanon, and the country with the highest number of refugees is Turkey.
