Liverpool is a city in North West England with an estimated population of almost 500,000 inhabitants. It is the fifth largest city in the UK. The name comes from the Old English "lifer", meaning thick or muddy water, and "pul", meaning a pool.

The city is located on the eastern side of the river Mersey estuary. Liverpool experiences a temperate maritime climate, with mild summers and cool winters.

The worlds first passenger railway line was built in 1830, from Liverpool to Manchester (about 50 kms.)

The inhabitants from Liverpool are called Liverpudlians or scousers.

It has one of the main ports in UK. For example, the Titanic had Liverpool as its home port. It provides passenger ferry services across the Irish Sea to Belfast, Dublin and the Isle of Man.
