1.- Affirmative (Regular Verbs):
Regular verbs use the verb's base form (live, work) plus the -ed ending (lived, worked). In the table below you can find some regular verbs and their spelling rules:
ADD -ed |
ADD -d |
ADD -ied |
DOUBLE CONSONANT |
CLIMB - climbed WORK - worked SHOW - showed WAIT - waited |
LIVE - lived MOVE - Moved DATE - dated ARRIVE - Arrived |
CRY - cried STUDY - studied TRY - tried TIDY - tidied |
TAP - Tapped COMMIT - Committed STOP - Stopped PLAN - Planned |
These are the rules:
1.- Most of the verbs add -ed.
2.- If a verb ends in "e", we only need to add the letter "d" to form the regular past form.
3.- If a regular verb ends in consonant + "y", we need to change the "y" to "i" and add -ed.
4.- If a verb ends in consonant + one vowel + consonant: Double the final consonant and add -ed
