North America is the Earth's third largest continent. It is made up the United States of America, Canada, Mexico, the countries in Central America and the Caribbean islands. As a whole, there are 23 independent states with an estimated population of 565 million people.
Greenland, the biggest island on Earth, is also in North America, although it belongs to the European country of Denmark.
It lies between the Atlantic Ocean to the East, and the Pacific Ocean to the West. To the North it borders with the Arctic Ocean, to the southeast with the Caribbean sea, and to the south it is connected with South America by land.
