2.- Victoria state

As we said before, Melbourne is the state capital of Victoria, one of the six states of Australia. Five of them are in the Australian mainland, while the island of Tasmania is about 200 kms south of the mainland.

Victoria is the smallest state on the Australian mainland, It is bordered by Bass Strait and Tasmania to the south, New South Wales is to the north, the Tasman Sea is to the east, and South Australia is to the west.

Victoria was named in honour of Queen Victoria after the British settlement. Prior to this there were three indigenous tribes living there: the Wurundjeri, Boonwurrung and Wathaurong
