Melbourne is the state capital of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia and Oceania, only after Sydney. Between 1901 and 1927, Melbourne was the capital city of Australia.
The city is located on the large natural bay of Port Philip, on the southern banks of the Yarra river and near the Macedon mountain ranges.The city has got almost 5 million inhabitants, which are called "Melbournians" (or "Aussies" for the natives).
Melbourne was the host city of the 1956 Summer Olympics being the first host city outside Europe and North America.
It was founded by British settlers in 1835. The leader of those settlers was John Batman; that was the reason why the area was first called "Batmania". Then the name was changed to "Melbourne" by the Governor of New South Wales in honour of the British Prime Minister at that moment: William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne.
