THERE WAS OR THERE WERE.
We use there was with singular and there were with plural.
Have a look at these examples in afirmative sentences:
✔ There was a cinema in your town 
✔ There were three chairs in the room 
To make the negative, add "not" to "was" or "were". You can also use the contracted forms "wasn't" and "weren't"
Examples:
✔ There wasn't an apple 
✔ There weren't many restaurants 
To make a question, put "was" or "were" before "there". Here you have two examples:
✔ Was there a bicycle? 
✔ Were there two books?
