2.- Digestive process:

a) Mouth

The human digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract plus the accessory organs of digestion (the tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder).

In this system, the process of digestion has many stages, the first of which starts in the mouth.


At the beginning of the digestion, teeth chew and crunch the food. This starts the process of chopping food into small pieces.


The tongue manipulates the food and it stimulates the secretion of saliva from the salivary glands. As you can see in the picture, there are three major pairs of salivary glands: the parotid, the submandibular, and the sublingual glands.
Saliva moistens and softens the food. This produces a bolus which can already be swallowed.
