STOP AND THINK

Chimamanda Ngozi's experience at school

Now here’s a from my childhood. When I was in school, my teacher said at the beginning of term that she would give the class a test and whoever got score would be the class monitor. Now, class monitor was a big deal. If you were a class monitor, you got to down the names of noise makers which was having enough power of its own but my teacher would also give you a cane to hold in your while you walk around and patrol the class for noise makers.
Now, of course, you are not actually allowed to use the cane but it was an prospect for a -year-old me. I very much wanted to be the class monitor and I got the highest score on the test. Then, to my surprise, my teacher said that the monitor had to be a . She had forgotten to make that clear earlier because she assumed it was obvious. A boy had the highest score on the test and he would be the monitor.

Now, what it was about this is that the boy was a gentle soul who had no interest in patrolling the class with a cane while I was full of to do so. But I was female and he was male and so he became the class monitor and I’ve forgotten that incident.

A stereotype is generally an unfair or untrue notion about people, a group of people or things. In a lot of cases they are racist, sexist or homophobic although there are also positive stereotypes.

Let's see how stereotypical our society is and try to guess which adjectives we normally relate to men and which ones we relate to women.

Active       Sensitive Ambitious Kind         Emotional Energetic
Brave        Adventurous Talkative Sociable Powerful Charming

Gender stereotypes are one of the causes of power imbalance. Traditional feminine roles label women as weak, dependent, sensitive and tied to family care while men are considered as powerful, independent, strong, etc. Consequently, society may feel that women are inferior to men and some men feel they can use violence to maintain their status.

It is in our hands to detect unfair situations and change attitudes to obtain equality in our relations to others. And we are sure that you can find situations in which you break stereotypes. For example, if you are a boy and you look after your grandma or you like romantic films or if you are a girl and you love football or mechanics...

Divide in groups of three. There are a couple of activities you have to do:

a. Choose a woman in history who has broken stereotype or even a member of your family and write a brief biography. Print it and and make a school mural with all of them.

b. Use a camera and record yourself telling the things you do that don't match stereotype. It will be part of a campaign to end gender stereotypes.
